What’s a silt curtain?
An innovative solution to control the settling of silt which is suspended in water as a result of aquatic construction, silt curtains are crucial for protecting flora and fauna. By limiting suspended sediment from reaching ecological sites where it could negatively impact on the natural eco-system, silt curtains are a necessity for projects including: dredging, excavating, rock walling and piling. Silt curtains are also known as turbidity curtains, flotation curtains, sediment curtains and silt screens.
Why is a silt curtain necessary for aquatic construction?
It’s common for sediment to be disturbed during aquatic construction. But if it’s not limited during the redispersion process, it results in reducing the natural light that reaches flora and fauna living in the underwater eco-system. This is due to turbidity or sediment burying the flora. Sea grass colonies, mangroves and coral varieties are generally the species most affected by heavy levels of sediment settling.
How is a silt curtain made?
Silt curtains are a permeable structure comprised of closed cell foam flotations, geotextile and galvanised chain ballasts. There is also the option of having external floats and specially engineered geotextile added during the manufacturing process, depending on the requirements of the construction project.
Customising of silt curtains
When manufacturing silt curtains for individual projects, these can be customised based on the project longevity, government regulations and operating sea states. Whatever the scale and specifications, Akuna can supply curtains designed and manufactured to individual project demands.
Different tiers of silt curtains for different applications
Contractors Curtain (Class 1)
This contractors curtain comes in both 1 metre and 2 metre skirts and 25 metre standard lengths. Generally used for short-term re standard lengths. Generally used for short-term projects in calm water states.
Silt Curtain (Class 2)
Manufactured from higher grade materials than Class 1 curtains, with ASTM F962 Z-connectors. It’s strong, durable and suitable for a broad scope of applications.
Silt Curtain (Class 3)
Top of the range silt curtain manufactured with internal floats. Fabricated with heavy duty ASTM F962 Z-connectors, additional hardware and extensive runs of strap webbing. With a breaking strength of 5,000 kg, this type of curtain is designed for both harbour and open water sea states.
Heavy Duty Permanent Curtain
This engineered curtain is custom-made and manufactured for long-term deployment. Often made from an engineered geomembrane, moulded HDPE floats and woven filter media which are externally attached to the silt curtain.
Silt curtains can be supplied in either a ready to install package, a ready to install anchor set, ropes and rigging or a complete design, supply and install.
Choosing the right silt curtain
When selecting a silt curtain, the important factor to consider is the degree of turbidity reduction in the controlled area, when compared to the turbidity levels outside the area.
